Irving has definite skill as a running back, both as a runner and receiver, and he showed excellent production at both Minnesota and Oregon in college. The question of his NFL viability could be pending whether the rookie fourth-round pick has the athletic tools necessary for his skills to manifest at the pro level. Fellow former Pac-12 back Myles Gaskin could be a cautionary tale – Gaskin was an exceptionally productive four-year player Washington, yet in the NFL his lack of power and speed has held Gaskin back. With just a 4.55-second 40 at 192 pounds, Irving's prospect profile raises some of the same concerns. If Irving's poor size-adjusted athleticism doesn't hold him back then Irving's skills should be able to carry him in the NFL. With the Buccaneers Irving is unlikely to challenge Rachaad White for usage in any phase, but as a complementary back off the bench Irving could provide a nice changeup and deliver some timely chunk gains for the Buccaneers. ANALYSIS
Given the muddled nature of the incoming rookie running backs, Irving was presumed to be one of the draft's best options following back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons with Oregon. A historically bad combine performance (4.55 40-yard dash at 192 pounds) saw Irving completely fall out of that conversation, but the landing spot Saturday might afford the 21-year-old an opportunity to play relevant snaps immediately with his new team. Rachaad White absorbed almost 350 touches last season with the team devoid of a true backup option, and while Irving's athletic testing was hardly pristine, the two-year starter was a capable enough runner and talented pass catcher in college that he'll act as a facsimile of sorts for the aforementioned White.

White is projected to remain the lead back, but Irving will immediately contribute as a receiver and is also expected to earn some carries in a rotational role. Running backs coach Skip Peete also noted that he believes in competition, so it's possible that Irving's role will expand if he proves to be effective.
