Fantasy MLS: Sunday Cheat Sheet

Fantasy MLS: Sunday Cheat Sheet

This article is part of our Daily Fantasy Soccer Cheat Sheet series.

If you're looking at the MLS schedule for Sunday, you'll notice there are three games to be played but only two on many DFS sites. The reason is that the Houston v. Toronto FC match was supposed to be played Saturday night but it was delayed to Sunday night due to poor weather conditions. Unfortunately, most slates were already set up before the cancelation, so we miss out on an opportunity to roster Sebastian Giovinco this weekend.

MATCHES (EDT)

4:00 p.m: Chicago Fire v. Orlando City
7:00 p.m: Seattle Sounders v. Real Salt Lake

ODDS REPORT

EXPECTED CORNER TAKERS

Chicago Fire: John Goossens, David Accam, Arturo Alvarez
Orlando City: Kaka
Seattle Sounders: Andreas Ivanschitz, Nicolas Lodeiro
Real Salt Lake: Joao Plata, Javier Morales

PLAYER RECOMMENDATIONS

GOALKEEPER

Matt Lampson, CHI v. ORL: With four poor defenses in play Sunday, there seems little reason to pay up for a goalkeeper given that the five-point clean sheet bonus is unlikely to come to fruition. Lampson got the start in Chicago's last game, and while it's possible that Sean Johnson gets the call Sunday, this definitely feels like a position to punt.

DEFENDER

Demar Phillips, RSL at SEA: Phillips has been playing very well of late, at least in the attack, picking up an assist in two of the last three games while sending in nine crosses and intercepting seven passes over that span. The clean sheet is unlikely, but the peripheral points should help move you up

The clean sheet is unlikely, but the peripheral points should help move you up the scoreboard.

Brandon Vincent, CHI v. ORL: Vincent's place in the starting lineup is far from guaranteed, but he's a solid attacking fullback when he gets the opportunity. He's a decent crosser and occasionally gets to take corners, and with no truly elite defenders on the slate, why pay up? If Vincent doesn't start and Michael Harrington does, he's worth a roll of the dice too.

MIDFIELDER

Nicolas Lodeiro, SEA AT RSL: Lodeiro has the fantasy upside of a player that should be priced among the elite at his position, but his salary continues to lag behind after recently joining Major League Soccer. In his two games with the Sounders he has two assists, six shots (two on target), 11 crosses and six fouls drawn, not bad production for only $5,000 on DraftKings.

Kaka, ORL v. CHI: Kaka is the most expensive option at any position on DraftKings, but his $9,600 salary feels like a steal given Saturday's slate had seven players over $10,000, including Giovinco's insane $14,500. While the Orlando City attack isn't quite as prolific without Kevin Molino, who is questionable with a hamstring injury, Kaka is still on top of all free kicks and corners and will be pulling the strings against a Fire defense that has allowed eight goals in the last three games.

FORWARD

Joao Plata, RSL at SEA: Plata has really come on of late, scoring double-digit fantasy points on DraftKings in four straight games, including twice over 20 despite scoring only one goal during that span. The Seattle defense has been improved of late, allowing one score in each of the last two games, but they were beaten 10 times in the three previous games, including a 4-2 loss to the Galaxy in the U.S. Open Cup, and Plata is plenty dangerous enough to break through.

David Accam, CHI v. ORL: Accam has been struggling of late, scoring just once in his last six games while only taking just nine shots over that span. However, nothing cures the ills of a struggling goal-scorer like a home game against an Orlando City side that's allowed 10 goals in its last four road matches. Hopefully Accam's poor game log will steer people away, because he's ready to break out.
