PFL losing streak hits two
WelterweightPFL
August 16, 2021
MacDonald lost to Ray Cooper via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 27-30) in the welterweight semifinals at PFL 7 on Friday in Hollywood, Florida.
ANALYSIS
MacDonald made it into the playoffs largely from points gained by a first-round submission of Curtis Millender in April. He lost a highly-controversial split decision to Gleison Tibau the following June, but it didn't prevent him from making the final four in the welterweight division. Cooper, a former PFL millionaire, was simply too big of a challenge. MacDonald posted a stellar 88 percent takedown defense during his UFC run, but he struggled to stay off his back here against a more physical Cooper. It was an easy call for the judges. Now 32 years old, MacDonald finds himself at yet another career crossroads.

Drops highly-controversial decision
WelterweightPFL
June 21, 2021
MacDonald fell to Gleason Tibau via split decision (28-29, 28-29, 29-28) at PFL 5 2021 on Thursday in Atlantic City.
ANALYSIS
MacDonald was visibly frustrated with this decision, and he very well had a case. Despite threatening with a first-round submission and landing the cleaner combinations, two of the three judges gave Tibau the first frame, and that was enough to tip the battle of former UFC combatants in Tibau's direction. Even with the loss, however, MacDonald remains in second place in the welterweight division with six points earned from his first-round submission of Curtis Millender in April, while Tibau has only these three points for the decision to his name. Stlll, MacDonald will likely need one more win in 2021 to lock in his playoff spot (and shot at the $1 million top prize).
2020 PFL season suspended
WelterweightPFL
April 20, 2020
MacDonald will not get to compete in the PFL this season, as the league has suspended its operations for the remainder of 2020, Brett Okamoto of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
MacDonald had recently signed with the PFL following a brief stint at Bellator, and had hoped to compete in the welterweight tournament, which offered a $1 million top prize. With the promotion unable to put on a full regular-season schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the entire 2020 will ultimately be scrapped. Contracted fighters will receive a monthly stipend, but MacDonald likely won't get a chance to compete with the company until 2021.
Strikes deal with PFL
WelterweightPFL
December 18, 2019
MacDonald signed an exclusive multi-fight deal with the Professional Fighters League on Wednesday and will compete for the welterweight title and $1 million grand prize in 2020, Ariel Helwani of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
MacDonald has moved on from Bellator in which he fought most recently in October and lost the welterweight title to Douglas Lima. That fight was the final one on MacDonald's contract which explains the reasoning behind his move to the PFL. MacDonald, who is now 30 years old, made his UFC debut as a 20-year-old undefeated prospect. He has several major victories including wins over Nate Diaz and Tyron Woodley and will definitely be a name to follow when he makes his PFL debut.
Bellator contract expires
WelterweightPFL
October 28, 2019
MacDonald (21-6-1) revealed after his loss to Douglas Lima (32-7-0) at Bellator 232 on Saturday that his contract with the promotion has expired, Nolan King and Matt Erickson of USA Today report.
ANALYSIS
Though Lima came away from the fight with a victory via unanimous decision, MacDonald said he believes a rematch between the welterweights will happen at some point down the road. Before that happens, however, MacDonald will likely need to negotiate a new deal with Bellator. The 30-year-old suggested he was interesting in re-signing rather than pursuing work with a different promotion.

MacDonald will face Douglas Lima on Oct. 26 for Bellator 232.
ANALYSIS
MacDonald will reportedly be rematching Lima who he defeated back in January of 2018 for the Bellator Welterweight Championship in Connecticut. MacDonald will be coming off a win over Neiman Gracie via an unanimous decision at Bellator 222 on June 14.
