Coleman (undisclosed) was released by the Saints on Sunday with a failed physical designation, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Coleman opened training camp on the PUP list, and while reports surfaced last week that he was close to 100 percent, the veteran wide receiver couldn't quite get right. The 26-year-old operated as the Saints' No. 3 wideout for most of last season, so he could draw interest elsewhere if he's medically cleared before Week 1.

An unrestricted free agent, Coleman re-signed with the Saints this offseason. The Rutgers product appeared in all 16 regular-season games for New Orleans last year, when his three touchdowns tied a career high. An excellent run blocker, Coleman saw substantial playing time as the Saints' No. 3 receiver but was generally an afterthought in the passing game, hauling in 23 of 37 passes for 364 yards. At 6-6, there's still hope that Coleman could turn into a dangerous red-zone target, but with the offseason additions of free agent Cameron Meredith (knee) and rookie third-round pick Tre'Quan Smith, Coleman faces stiff competition for playing time in 2018 behind Michael Thomas and Ted Ginn.
Coleman's first three seasons in New Orleans can be described in a single word: inconsistent. At 6-6, 225 pounds, Coleman should be a dangerous red-zone threat but the big receiver has scored only five touchdowns in 32 career games. Moreover, the former undrafted free agent has struggled with drops throughout his career, and while he flashed some playmaking ability on occasion, Coleman has never been able to rise above fourth on the Saints' wide receiver depth chart. Nevertheless, after signing a one-year tender this offseason, Coleman returns to the Big Easy in 2017, when he should once again enter training camp as the team's fourth receiver, behind Michael Thomas, Willie Snead, and Ted Ginn.
At an imposing 6-foot-6, many projected Coleman to be a breakout performer last season, or at the very least, a legitimate end-zone threat. Instead, Coleman struggled to earn significant playing time in a crowded Saints receiving corps, and it was another young receiver who made some serious noise in fantasy leagues, as the unheralded Willie Snead emerged as the Saints' No. 2 wide receiver. With Marques Colston no longer in New Orleans, Coleman could still have some sleeper potential -- he managed to put together a few solid performances when Colston was sidelined with injuries last year -- but will have to hold off 2016 second-round draft pick Michael Thomas for playing time.
Though he was well-known out of Rutgers due to his formidable size (6-foot-6, 225 pounds), Coleman was not selected in last year's draft and was signed as an undrafted free agent by New Orleans. He struggled with drops early in training camp but bounced back nicely and spent most of the year on the team's practice squad, before being promoted to the active roster in Week 17. While Coleman failed to appear in a game, he's repeatedly drawn the praise of the Saints' coaching staff this offseason. With the Saints' wide-receiver depth chart wide open following the trades of Jimmy Graham and Kenny Stills, Coleman's size makes him, at the very least, an intriguing red-zone threat if he can earn playing time.
Coleman's massive size and wingspan, combined with decent speed could land him a roster spot down the road.
