ANALYSIS
Gindl spent 2017 at Double-A Richmond, hitting .284/.335/.533 in 44 games. The 29-year-old has not appeared in the major leagues since 2014 with Milwaukee, and will have to show some consistency at the plate to make it back.

Gindl was a long shot to see big league action last season, but Ryan Braun’s suspension opened up some playing time for him in left field. Though Gindl’s batting average did not jump off the page, he posted a respectable 20:25 BB:K ratio and also totaled 14 extra-base hits in limited at-bats. Gindl does not possess the typical size of a corner outfielder, but he does own a career .462 minor league slugging percentage, and he has moved his way up the Brewers’ outfield depth chart. Gindl figures to see some action in left field against tough right-handers in place of Khris Davis following Braun's move to right field.
After posting an .862 OPS in his first season at Triple-A Nashville in 2011, Gindl struggled a bit last year, finishing the campaign with just a .740 mark. Gindl still owns a .826 career OPS in the minors, but he lacks the power of a true corner outfielder and is blocked by a number of outfielders in Milwaukee. Gindl's hitting ability could land him a reserve spot in Milwaukee if he can rebound, but at this point it is unlikely he will be more than a fill-in if he stays with the Brewers.
Gindl hit .307/.390/.472 with 15 home runs as a 22-year-old for Triple-A Nashville in 2011 so you would think he would be banging on the door for a job in the majors. The problem is that he's relegated to a corner-outfield spot defensively and at 5-foot-9', many scouts have doubts that he'll provide much more power in the future. The Brewers are also set in the outfield with Ryan Braun and Corey Hart for the foreseeable future. Gindl will likely spend 2012 back in Nashville where he can work on improving his contact rate and becoming more productive against left-handed pitching.
Gindl hit .272/.352/.406 in 463 at-bats for Double-A Huntsville in 2010. He's been young for his level at each stop in the minors, but he's also seen his OPS decline at each level along the way. His short and stocky stature is the main concern for scouts, and many are concerned that he won't develop enough power to be an everyday corner outfielder in the majors. If that happens, he'll be labeled as a fourth outfielder and is destined to spend his big league career constantly battling for at-bats.
Gindl continued his methodical path through the minors in 2009, hitting .277/.363/.459 for High-A Brevard County. His lack of size dampens the enthusiasm of scouts, but his 13 percent walk rate as a 20-year-old can't be overlooked. There is some concern that he'll lack the power to play a corner outfield spot, but his walk rate and an 18:4 SB:CS ratio in 2009 may make up for that. He'll get a big test in 2010 when he moves up to Double-A Huntsville.
While Gindl's .307/.388/.474 line at Low-A West Virginia doesn't look spectacular, it's still very good for a 19-year-old in his first full season of pro ball. Gindl has an advanced batting eye for his age, but also averaged more than a strikeout per game. Some scouts have their doubts about him because of his 5'9 frame and he needs to make more consistent contact, but he is a definite sleeper candidate. The Brewers will move him up one level at a time so he's still years away from the big leagues.
Gindl was a fifth-round pick in 2007 and made a big impression right away. He hit .372/.420/.580 for Rookie level Helena as an 18-year-old in his debut season. Some scouts are wary of his short stature and he's been compared to Brian Giles. He'll likely start next season at Low-A.
