ANALYSIS
Making his first start of the season for the Mets and batting ninth, Nido threw out Will Smith attempting to swipe second base to end the third inning -- a noteworthy event only because Francisco Alvarez (thumb) and Omar Narvaez had gone a combined 0-for-28 to begin the season in throwing out base stealers. With Alvarez sidelined and Narvaez batting just .200 (5-for-25), Nido's defense could earn him more than just a short-side platoon role while he's in the majors.

Nido is valued for his contributions behind the plate, namely his defense and pitch framing. If you're a Mets pitcher, Nido is neat-o, but he doesn't do enough with the bat to be worthy of consideration in standard mixed leagues. He's topped out at four home runs in a season and owns a career .323 SLG. He's struck out in roughly a quarter of his 744 career plate appearances in the majors, though to his credit he surged to a .280/.306/.449 line after the All-Star break last season. The Mets signed Omar Narvaez and have top prospect Francisco Alvarez waiting in the wings, leaving Nido as a placeholder keeping a seat warm. Nido can be considered viable in two-catcher NL-only formats, but that's only until Alvarez supplants him.
