McBroom was a candidate to be removed from the Royals' 40-man roster this offseason, and rather than waiting for the organization to make a decision on his status, the 29-year-old is apparently intent on exploring playing opportunities in Asia. He's spent parts of the last three seasons in the majors, accruing a .268/.322/.427 slash line (99 wRC+) in 177 plate appearances.

Kansas City acquired McBroom from the Yankees on Saturday in exchange for international signing bonus money and future considerations. The righty bat, who'll turn 28 in April, is subject to the upcoming Rule 5 draft unless he earns a 40-man roster spot, and the Royals -- who drafted him in 2013 -- probably want to audition him for a future role as they play out the string on a lost season. He smashed 26 homers, drove in 66 runs and scored 87 times while slashing an excellent .215/.402/.574 in 482 plate appearances for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, his second go-round at the International League.

Save for a 13-day stretch in mid-to-late September, McBroom spent the 2020 season with the Royals. The right-handed swinger predictably did most of his damage against southpaws, posting a .907 OPS in 30 PA with the platoon edge compared to a .669 mark facing same-handed pitching. McBroom's power emanated from a 52.9% flyball rate, which was much higher than the level he previously displayed throughout his pro career. A 35.3 K% limited the chances to go deep. The Royals signed the durable Carlos Santana to play first and have the defensively-challenged Jorge Soler at designated hitter, limiting McBroom to the occasional fill-in start with a lefty on the hill, if he even makes the team.
