Lopez was outrighted to Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday.
ANALYSIS
After going unclaimed off waivers, Lopez will remain in the Atlanta organization as a depth catcher in the high minors. Since Gwinnett teammate Alex Jackson already has a spot on the 40-man roster, he'll presumably rank ahead of Lopez for a promotion in the event the big club requires another catcher beyond Brian McCann and Tyler Flowers.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2015
Lopez's ability to draw walks at a high clip has carried him through the minor leagues thus far. Unfortunately for the 29-year-old, even that calling card disappeared in 2016 as he only managed to draw walks in 5.3 percent of his plate appearances while striking out at a 23.1 percent clip. Pair that with his .213 batting average and non-existent power, and you get a backstop who's destined for an organizational depth role. He did log a few innings at the major league level at the tail-end of 2016 due to injuries to both Devin Mesoraco and Tucker Barnhart, but he ended up going 0-for-7 with three strikeouts and no free passes. Lopez was designated for assignment following the season's conclusion, so it's safe to ignore him in all fantasy formats.
The 27-year-old Lopez is not a prospect, and he doesn't have a ton of pop, but what he does have is a good batting eye, as evidenced by a 78:93 BB:K ratio in his last two years with Double-A Tennessee. His BB:K ratio declined a bit when he finally reached Triple-A last year, and his stint in the majors was too small to provide any good data points, but if he makes the Cubs as a backup in 2015, he might be able to hit .280 in limited action.
