Tommy John surgery is, for obvious reasons, mostly associated with pitchers, but Skole is providing an example of how it can derail a promising hitting career as well. The first baseman's 2013 season was scuttled due to an elbow injury, and while he managed to play a full schedule last year, Skole didn't look at all like the same hitter he was before he went under the knife. Prior to getting hurt, the left-handed slugger showed flashes of becoming a classic walks, wallops and whiffs first baseman, and Nationals manager Matt Williams even compared him to Jim Thome, but with Ryan Zimmerman now moving across the diamond to preserve his shoulder the club doesn't seem to have room for him any more. Skole was left unprotected heading into the Rule 5 draft but wasn't taken, which means he'll continue to try to recoup value in the Nats' system for now.
Big things were expected from Skole last year, but wrist and elbow injuries cut short his campaign before it could even get started. The Nationals are still searching for a long-term answer at first base though, and Skole's left-handed power-and-patience profile seems like a perfect fit, so if he can put together a strong 2014 season, he'll be right back in the club's plans.
Skole's pro debut went swimmingly, as he had no difficulty carrying over the power stroke and plate discipline he showed in college and wound up being named the Nationals' Minor League Player of the Year. He is probably looking at a move across the diamond at some point, more due to his own defensive limitations than Anthony Rendon's presence in the system, and given that Skole is already 23 he still needs to prove himself against more advanced competition. To his credit, he held his own in the AFL this offseason, and that classic lefty Three True Outcomes profile could take him a long way at first base.
