Richmond got off to a late start last season following a shoulder impingement, making just eight starts across three stops in the Jays' minor league system. He probably deserves more of a look than he'll get this spring and could be a serviceable starter at the back end of a rotation, but he'll need a lot of things to break his way for that to happen in Toronto.
Richmond won the fifth starter spot out of spring and was pitching quite well despite getting the fifth starter treatment before a shoulder injury landed him on the DL in July. Prior to his injury he had a nice season going (85.1 innings, 72 hits, 30 walks, 71 K, 1.195 WHIP and a 3.69 ERA) despite an alarming 15 homers, but he never really got back on track after returning (1.950 WHIP, 8.44 ERA in 11 starts post-injury). He'll be back as the team's No. 2 or No. 3 pitcher, but we'd like to see him solve his gopheritis.
Richmond likely earned himself some additional consideration when spring rolls around with some serviceable starts down the stretch for the Jays. Between stops at Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Syracuse he allowed 133 hits and 43 walks in 137.2 innings, striking out 124. He's already 29 and came up through the ranks of the Independent Northern League and Team Canada in the 2007 WBC, so he's not a prospect, but he'll have a chance to land a rotation spot given the state of things in Toronto.
