Heads to 60-day IL
The Nationals placed Strasburg (thoracic outlet syndrome) on the 60-day injured list Thursday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Strasburg is essentially medically retired from baseball after he struggled to bounce back from his July 2021 thoracic outlet syndrome surgery, but he remains in the organization after he and the Nationals have thus far been unable to come to an agreement on how to dispense the $105 million he's still owed over the remaining three seasons of the seven-year, $245 million contract he signed in December 2019. Washington ownership is believed to be interested in deferring more of the money remaining in the deal, but Strasburg is already due $80 million in deferred money from 2027 through 2029 and is presumably keen on getting more of his salary up front. Until a resolution on Strasburg's financial situation is reached, he'll remain on the Nationals' books, though placing him on the 60-day IL at least frees up a 40-man roster spot.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Status unknown for 2023
Nationals president Mike Rizzo stated Tuesday that Strasburg's 2023 status is a "mystery," reports Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com.
ANALYSIS
Strasburg missed all but one game this season, as he missed the first three months with a neck injury and suffered a stress reaction in his ribs after his lone start July 9. The 33-year-old has made a total of eight starts over the last three seasons, compiling a 6.89 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 28:17 K:BB in 31.1 innings in that span. Washington owes him $140 million over the next four seasons and will hope that he can recover fully and be a contributing member of its rotation soon.

In part due to the inability to work with the Nationals training staff during the lockout, Strasburg wasn't fully recovered from undergoing thoracic outlet surgery in July of 2021. He spent the first half rehabbing with bullpen sessions and three minor league starts before debuting on June 9. That turned out to be Strasburg's only appearance as he felt more discomfort after the outing. Strasburg is attempting to strengthen his neck and shoulder, but the recovery rate from thoracic outlet syndrome is a mixed bag. Strasburg is a wild card coming into this season. Even on the off chance he's healthy, he hasn't accumulated even 50 innings since compiling 209 innings in 2019. A late pick in a league with an IL is defensible, but nothing more.
