Mental mistake leads to draw
FeatherweightUFC
February 5, 2023
Choi and Kyle Nelson fought to a majority draw (29-27, 28-28, 28-28) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Fighting for the first time in three years and a handful of months, Choi made an incomprehensible mental mistake which turned a clear-cut victory into a disappointing draw. With the fight up for grabs in Round 3, Choi hit Nelson with a headbutt from top position. It was by no means vicious, but it was clearly intentional, and referee Chris Tognoni was correct in docking him a point. The end result was all three judges scoring the round 9-9 and changing a unanimous decision Choi victory to a majority draw. Choi didn't absorb much damage in this fight, which means it's imperative he step back into the Octagon ASAP. He'll be 32 years of age this coming April, is winless in his last four fights (0-3-1), and is without a victory dating back to July 2016.

Fight moved to Vegas
FeatherweightUFC
December 28, 2022
Choi's scheduled featherweight matchup against Kyle Nelson will now take place at UFC Vegas 68 on Feb. 4 at the Apex in Las Vegas, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Choi has seen $50,000 post-fight bonuses in each of his past five fights, but his last three trips to the Octagon have unfortunately ended in defeat. He was set to return from a three-year layoff in his native South Korea, but the UFC ultimately scrapped the entire event and moved it to Las Vegas. While Choi won't have the crowd in his favor as much, it's still a quality bounce-back opportunity against a fighter who is 1-4 under the UFC banner.
Return fight in Seoul
FeatherweightUFC
November 9, 2022
Choi (shoulder) will take on Kyle Nelson in a featherweight matchup at UFC Seoul on Feb. 4, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
It's been a long time on the sidelines for Choi, who hasn't competed since a TKO loss to Charles Jourdain in December of 2019. He's since attempted to book a return fight in May of 2021, but a should injury sidelined him for essentially another year. Choi will return having lost three in a row and is likely past "prospect" status at the age of 31. It could be the last call for "The Korean Superboy" in his home country, despite having earned five post-fight bonuses in six trips to the Octagon.
Suffers injury, won't fight Chavez
FeatherweightUFC
July 17, 2021
Choi announced Saturday that he suffered a shoulder injury during a recent training session and will no longer be able to fight Danny Chavez at UFC Vegas 33 on July 31, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Choi doesn't expect to miss a significant amount of time due to the injury, but since he would have been well below 100 percent by the end of the month, he opted to withdraw from the fight. The UFC hasn't announced whether it will look for a replacement for Choi on the July 31 card.
Cleared for July return
FeatherweightUFC
May 24, 2021
Choi (arm) will fight Danny Chavez (foot) at the UFC's event on July 31, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
ANALYSIS
Both fighters are returning from injury, Choi due to arm surgery undergone December of 2019 and Chavez due to a foot injury sustained back in February. Prior to his injury Choi suffered three consecutive losses, so defeating Chavez will be pivotal to his career with the UFC promotion.
Undergoes surgery
FeatherweightUFC
December 24, 2019
Choi underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a broken arm suffered at UFC Busan on Dec. 21, MMAJunkie.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Choi lost his fight against Charles Jourdain via TKO (punches) at UFC Busan, but he evidently suffered a broken arm that likely hindered his striking ability and led to his third consecutive loss. The 28-year-old will likely require some extra time to recover, but he could receive another opportunity with the promotion given the promise that he's shown in the past.
