I play in a 12-team Mixed League 5x5 dynasty auction league. $300 payroll.
I have a two-part question. One specific to my team, the other a generalized question for fantasy baseball to which I entering my second year back after a 15-year hiatus.
1. General question: How do you determine trade value in the pre-season for a position which has a virtual monopoly over 1 stat in a 5x5 format but little contribution in the other 4. What is the best closer worth now? Obviously, mid season, it's easier to determine the value when people start looking at their relative positions in the standings, but in the pre-season where noone really knows what they will get in the auction or who will be kept, it seems really challenging to determine value.
2. Specifically to my team:
These are the keepers I'm considering:
Pos Name 2013 $
C Mike Napoli $5
1B Adam Laroche $5
2B Aaron Hill $5
SS Ian Desmond $4
3B Evan Longoria $43
IF Jed Lowrie $5
OF Nick Markakis $6
OF Austin Jackson $6
OF Shane Victorino $10
UTIL Shin Soo Choo $19
P Cliff Lee $29
P Jered Weaver $25
P Ricky Romero $5
P Jeff Samardzija $5
P Matt Garza $6
P Jim Johnson $5
P Mariano Rivera $17
P Fernando Rodney $5
BENCH Josh Reddick $5
BENCH Trevor Plouffe $5
BENCH Ryan Doumit $5
BENCH Carlos Beltran $4
That's $224 to fill 4 spots and leave some transaction money in the pot. I think this is a decent team, but I don't know that I want to head into the season with 3 closers.
Which one should I consider moving and what is reasonable to ask in return (pos/tier) for that player?
