Weekly Rankings: Week 8 Value Meter

This article is part of our Weekly Rankings series.

***BYE WEEKS - New York Giants and San Francisco. First posted Tuesday, 10/21. Sunday Update Complete, check our latest news for anything pertinent before kickoff.***

Here are our rankings for the coming week at each position to help you decide your starting lineup. Our rankings are based on the following scoring system: three points for a passing touchdown; six points for a rushing/receiving touchdown; one point for every 20 passing yards; and one point for every 10 rushing/receiving yards. Flex Rankings are for PPR leagues.

Typically, this article will be posted on Tuesday evenings, roughly around 8:00 pm PT. ***These are not draft rankings. They are solely for the given week of the season.***

I will update these during the week, usually twice per week to account for injury or other news during practice. The timing of those updates will vary based on the news at hand and my schedule for the given week. But the first of those updates usually won't happen until Thursday. At any rate, I will post a "last updated" note at the top of the article, or an "update in progress" note if it's while I'm doing it.

By all means, if you want to discuss a rank, or want me to add a player, chime in on the comments. I try to be receptive to your feedback and try to respond to most comments, though on occasion the volume can be quite thick. Please refer to the rankings first when asking "should

Quarterback

1.Aaron Rodgers GB at NO
2.Peyton Manning DEN vs. SD
3.Drew Brees NO vs. GB
Note: Brees threw for 342 yards against the Lions' tough defense, though he threw a killer interception and was 1-for-11 during a critical stretch of the fourth quarter.
4.*Tony Romo DAL vs. Was
Note: Standard rest day Thursday (usually Wednesday, but the Cowboys are playing Monday night). ***Had full practices Friday and Saturday, listed as probable.***
5.Andrew Luck IND at Pit
6.Matthew Stafford DET at Atl
7.*Tom Brady NE vs. Chi
Note: (Ankle) Full practice on Thursday.
8.Russell Wilson SEA at Car
9.Jay Cutler CHI at NE
10.Philip Rivers SD at Den
11.Alex Smith KC vs. StL
12.Carson Palmer ARZ vs. Phi
Note: Palmer isn't throwing deep that often, and in the process he's transitioned well to being more of a game-manager type of quarterback.
13.Nick Foles PHI at Ari
14.Ryan Tannehill MIA at Jax
15.Kyle Orton BUF at NYJ
16.Cam Newton CAR vs. Sea
17.Matt Ryan ATL vs. Det
Note: Sacked five more times by the Ravens in the loss.
18.Joe Flacco BAL at Cin
19.Ben Roethlisberger PIT vs. Ind
20.*Mike Glennon TB vs. Min
Note: Took the first-team snaps in practice Monday, though McCown took some snaps too. ***Expected to start Sunday, and McCown is listed as questionable, although McCown did have a full practice Friday. CONFIRMED STARTER***
21.Teddy Bridgewater MIN at TB
22.*Brian Hoyer CLE vs. Oak
Note: Hoyer had a dismal game against the Jaguars, but he's been confirmed as the starter for Week 8. It's funny how quickly the conventional wisdom can change on a player - at the beginning of the season, the Browns were crazy not to insert Manziel right away, then they were geniuses for doing so after the PIT and TEN wins, and now they're crazy again.
23.Austin Davis STL at KC
24.*Ryan Fitzpatrick HOU at Ten
Note: Ryan Mallett will get snaps in practice this week, but Fitzpatrick will still start.
25.Geno Smith NYJ vs. Buf
26.Derek Carr OAK at Cle
27.*Colt McCoy WAS at Dal
Note: McCoy will handle the starter reps in practice this week - it'll be either McCoy or RGIII starting this week. ***Took the majority of the first-team reps in practice Friday.***
28.Blake Bortles JAC vs. Mia
29.Andy Dalton CIN vs. Bal
Note: Averaged less than four yards per target in the loss to the Colts.
30.*Zach Mettenberger TEN vs. Hou
Note: Getting his first NFL start this week.
31.*Robert Griffin WAS at Dal
Note: (Ankle) Not yet ruled out, but my best guess is that it will be either next week or after the bye before he returns. When he's ready, however, he will start. Making 'steady progress' and it's possible he could start - coach Jay Gruden said that he'd take it all the way until an hour before gametime until naming his starter. ***Listed as questionable for Monday night after limited practices all week.***
32.Charlie Whitehurst TEN vs. Hou
Note: Zach Mettenberger has been named the starter this week.
33.*Jake Locker TEN vs. Hou
Note: (Thumb) Slated to throw again Tuesday to see his progress.
34.*Kirk Cousins WAS at Dal
Note: Conventional wisdom changing quickly, part 2 - so much for the idea that he should permanently take over for RGIII for the rest of the season - getting benched in favor of Colt McCoy is a new low.
35.*Josh McCown TB vs. Min
Note: (Thumb) Took some snaps at Monday's practice, but Glennon got the first team reps. Limited practice this week.

Running Backs

1.DeMarco Murray DAL vs. Was
2.Arian Foster HOU at Ten
3.Le'Veon Bell PIT vs. Ind
4.Matt Forte CHI at NE
5.*Jamaal Charles KC vs. StL
Note: The last two weeks the Rams have completely sold out to stop the run, daring the Niners and Seahawks to make the quarterback beat them. I imagine they'll continue to do so this week with the Chiefs. Passed a series of concussion tests after taking a head-to-head shot last week.
6.Marshawn Lynch SEA at Car
7.Lamar Miller MIA at Jax
8.Ahmad Bradshaw IND at Pit
9.*Andre Ellington ARZ vs. Phi
Note: Suffered sore ribs against the Raiders but didn't suffer any structural damage. Limited practice Wednesday, as per usual. ***Listed as probable on the injury report.***
10.*LeSean McCoy PHI at Ari
Note: ***Moved down a couple of notches due to the matchup and the probability that Sproles will play after all.***
11.Eddie Lacy GB at NO
12.Justin Forsett BAL at Cin
13.Jerick McKinnon MIN at TB
14.Joique Bell DET at Atl
15.Chris Ivory NYJ vs. Buf
16.Ronnie Hillman DEN vs. SD
17.*Mark Ingram NO vs. GB
Note: Played 25 snaps in his return to action, but with Pierre Thomas out he'll probably get more work this week. ***Moved up a little more with Khiry Robinson declared out for this week too.***
18.*Branden Oliver SD at Den
Note: Likely to get another start and full share of carries Thursday with Donald Brown and Ryan Mathews still out of practice Tuesday.
19.*Shane Vereen NE vs. Chi
Note: ***Listed as questionable due to an illness.***
20.*Giovani Bernard CIN vs. Bal
Note: (Ribs) Limited in Thursday's practice. ***Listed as probable.***
21.*Denard Robinson JAC vs. Mia
Note: The new starter in Jacksonville. Gus Bradley reiterated that Robinson would start even with Toby Gerhart returning this week.
22.*Alfred Morris WAS at Dal
Note: Briefly treated for an ankle injury in the win over the Titans but later returned, only to do very little for the game. ***Was able to practice all week, is listed as probable for Monday night's game.***
23.Ben Tate CLE vs. Oak
Note: The loss of center Alex Mack really bogged down Tate and the other Browns RBs.
24.*Tre Mason STL at KC
Note: Appears to be the man in St. Louis, albeit not on passing downs. Fumbled late against the Seahawks, but luckily for him a teammate recovered.
25.Darren McFadden OAK at Cle
26.Doug Martin TB vs. Min
27.Steven Jackson ATL vs. Det
28.Jonathan Stewart CAR vs. Sea
29.*Anthony Dixon BUF at NYJ
Note: Likely takes over the starting RB role for the Bills after injuries to both Jackson and Spiller last week, but Bryce Brown could also figure in the carries. Lined up with the first team in the media access portion of Wednesday's practice.
30.*Travaris Cadet NO vs. GB
Note: Bigger role in the Saints' passing game with Pierre Thomas likely out 2-3 weeks with a shoulder injury. Possible that Khiry Robinson could also sit out.
31.Jeremy Hill CIN vs. Bal
32.Isaiah Crowell CLE vs. Oak
33.*Benny Cunningham STL at KC
Note: ***(Knee) Listed as probable.***
34.*Bishop Sankey TEN vs. Hou
Note: ***Moved down with the news that Shonn Greene was listed as probable on the injury report, though we're awaiting word from the Titans on their intentions after Greene was arrested Friday night.***
35.*James Starks GB at NO
Note: Suffered an ankle injury in the third quarter last week. Was wearing pads in practice Thursday. ***Listed as probable.***
36.*Darren Sproles PHI at Ari
Note: (MCL tear) Practiced Tuesday, could return to action this week. Limited practice participant Wednesday. I'll wait until I see what he does in Friday's practice before bumping him up. ***Questionable, but had a full practice Friday.***
37.Antone Smith ATL vs. Det
38.Matt Asiata MIN at TB
39.Alfred Blue HOU at Ten
40.Bernard Pierce BAL at Cin
41.*Theo Riddick DET at Atl
Note: (Hamstring) Could return to action this week, especially if Reggie Bush is hampered in practice. Full practice Thursday. ***Listed as probable while Reggie Bush is doubtful.***
42.Chris Johnson NYJ vs. Buf
43.*Stepfan Taylor ARZ vs. Phi
Note: Took advantage of his goal line back role twice against the Raiders. Could get signficant action this week too if Ellington's rib injury turns out to limit him in Week 8.
44.Roy Helu WAS at Dal
45.*Bryce Brown BUF at NYJ
Note: Should be active finally, but we'll see if he or Anthony Dixon steps in first with both Jackson and Spiller out.
46.Bobby Rainey TB vs. Min
47.LeGarrette Blount PIT vs. Ind
48.Joseph Randle DAL vs. Was
49.Knile Davis KC vs. StL
50.*Toby Gerhart JAC vs. Mia
Note: (Foot) Will be evaluated again Wednesday. Could get some reps this week, but why would the Jags use him extensively after Denard Robinson's performance last week? ***Full practice Friday, listed as probable.***
51.Brandon Bolden NE vs. Chi
Note: Played fewer snaps than Jonas Gray last week, but I wouldn't cut him just yet. The Patriots' RB rotation is hardly firm from week-to-week. This week might be a better week to have their RBs run between the tackles.
52.Juwan Thompson DEN vs. SD
53.Maurice Jones-Drew OAK at Cle
54.Damien Williams MIA at Jax
55.Jacquizz Rodgers ATL vs. Det
56.Devonta Freeman ATL vs. Det
57.Jonas Gray NE vs. Chi
58.Storm Johnson JAC vs. Mia
Note: A late touchdown prevented last week's game from being a total disaster, but he's clearly taking a back seat to Denard Robinson. Back to third-string status this week.
59.Dexter McCluster TEN vs. Hou
60.*Shonn Greene TEN vs. Hou
Note: (Hamstring) Limited in Wednesday's practice. ***Arrested Friday on charges of a handicap parking violation plus driving on a suspended/revoked license. He previously had been upgraded to probable on the injury report after practicing Thursday and Friday.***
61.*Dan Herron IND at Pit
Note: ***Could be part of timeshare Sunday if Trent Richardson can't play.***

Note: Odd man out after Mason and Cunningham last week.

78.Ronnie Brown SD at Den

Note: ***Promoted from the Saints' practice squad.***

Note: Signed by the Bills, probably will be the third-string back.
81.*James White NE vs. Chi
Note: Healthy scratch last Thursday in favor of Jonas Gray.
82.*Khiry Robinson NO vs. GB
Note: (Forearm) Didn't practice Wednesday. ***Declared out for Sunday's game.***
83.*Trent Richardson IND at Pit
Note: Injured his hamstring against the Bengals. Did not practice Thursday. ***Listed as questionable after not practicing Friday.***

Note: Out 2-3 weeks with a shoulder injury.
85.*Fozzy Whittaker CAR vs. Sea
Note: (Thigh) Did not practice Wednesday. ***Officially out this week.***

81.Jarvis Landry MIA at Jax
82.Zach Ertz PHI at Ari
83.*Jimmy Graham NO vs. GB

Note: (Ribs) Limited practice Wednesday. ***Listed as probable.***
85.*Reggie Bush DET at Atl

86.*Anthony Dixon BUF at NYJ
Note: Likely takes over the starting RB role for the Bills after injuries to both Jackson and Spiller last week, but Bryce Brown could also figure in the carries. Lined up with the first team in the media access portion of Wednesday's practice.

Note: Limited snaps this week as he learns the offense.
88.Jeremy Hill CIN vs. Bal
89.Isaiah Crowell CLE vs. Oak
90.*Travaris Cadet NO vs. GB
Note: Bigger role in the Saints' passing game with Pierre Thomas likely out 2-3 weeks with a shoulder injury. Possible that Khiry Robinson could also sit out.

Note: Could have a bigger role this week if Reggie Wayne misses the game.
93.James Jones OAK at Cle

100.Davante Adams GB at NO

111.*Calvin Johnson DET at Atl
Note: Ankle is doing better, but he doesn't yet know if he'll play against the Falcons. The Lions have their bye next week. Did 'much more' in Thursday's practice, running some routes. It's possible that he plays. You'll have to get up early to find out, though, with the game kicking off at 9:30 a.m. ET. ***Inactive again this week.***
112.*A.J. Green CIN vs. Bal
Note: Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said Monday that Green (toe) has made significant progress. Lewis has consistently been more optimistic than other sources over the course of Green's absence. Did not practice Wednesday or Thursday. ***Not expected to play this week, but if all goes well Wednesday, he could return next week.***
113.*Owen Daniels BAL at Cin
Note: (Knee) Did not practice Wednesday or Thursday. ***Got his knee scoped on Friday and is out. Crockett Gillmore will start in his place.***
