ANALYSIS
The reason for Brooks' suspension hasn't been disclosed. It's the first time Brooks has been suspended by the league. He played 12 games for the Packers last season, making 19 tackles and 1.5 sacks. The 34-year-old will have a difficult time finding new employment with this on his resume.

In a somewhat surprising turn of events, the 33-year-old linebacker was not moved out of San Francisco despite the team switching to a 4-3 scheme. Brooks spent the entirety of his seven-year tenure with the 49ers as a 3-4 outside linebacker, averaging 44 tackles and 6.5 sacks per season over that span. Despite his advanced age and potentially mismatched skill set, the 49ers currently list him as their starting left outside linebacker. Brooks may find it difficult to match his yearly sack totals in his new role, but the reduction in sacks may be offset by an increase in tackles in 2017. The veteran doesn't possess the upside of his fellow projected starters (NaVorro Bowman and Reuben Foster), but he could have IDP value if he can adjust to the new defensive look in San Francisco.

The 32-year-old linebacker took a step back in the right direction after posting disappointing totals in 2014. He surpassed his 2014 totals by posting 42 tackles and 6.5 sacks in 14 games last year. With Aaron Lynch suspended for the first four games of the season, Brooks is all but a lock to start at one of the outside linebacker spots. He will have to keep up his production as there are several younger options hungry for opportunity behind him.

Last season was a tumultuous one for Brooks. He showed up to training camp out of shape and was losing snaps to rookie Aaron Lynch. He was visibly disgruntled with the lack of playing time he received, even removing himself from the 49ers' week 11 matchup with the Giants. That coupled with swirling trade rumors felt that like end of Brooks' run with San Francisco. However, the club retained Brooks this offseason, and if he is not moved during training camp, he will compete with Aaron Lynch for the starting spot alongside Aldon Smith.

After a career-year in 2013 (60 TOT, 8.5 sacks), Brooks is lined up to be the starting left outside linebacker for the 49ers in 2014.

Though he may face a team-mandated suspension early in the year for offseason off-field problems, Brooks is expected to be the starting outside linebacker on the left side and an integral part of the 49ers pass rush. The seven-year veteran is expected to improve on his 6.5-sack performance in 2012 and should be a solid contributor in IDP leagues.

Brooks will likely start at outside linebacker.

Brooks is a skilled pass-rusher who received extra reps in spring work due to the absence of Manny Lawson. He'll be in the linebacker rotation on second and third downs with the opportunity to record sacks, and could push Lawson for his starting job during training camp.

Brooks should end up making the 53-man roster and will add depth to both the outside and inside linebacking corp.

Brooks will see plenty of action on special teams as and limited time on defense as a backup linebacker for the Bengals.

One of the bigger IDP wildcards heading into this season, Brooks could end up as the Bengals' starting middle linebacker, piling up the tackles, or he could be a fringe player. He's extremely talented but also carries a lot of personal baggage.

Back-up middle linebacker. Brooks was picked in the supplemental draft so he missed rookie camp and offseason workouts, but he has been impressive thus far in training camp. He begins the season behind Brian Simmons on the depth chart at middle linebacker, and will also be competing for playing time with last year's rookie sensation Odell Thurman when Thurman comes off suspension. But the early buzz is that it is more a question of "when" Brooks will earn a starting linebacker spot as opposed to "if". Is worth keeping an eye on, but more for the future than for this season.
