Sunday's two-game MLB slate starts at 7:38 PM Eastern time with Cubs-Dodgers Game 2 and also features Sunday's Astros-Yankees Game 3 clash. The players below are primed for success in this slate relative to their respective prices, making them the night's top value plays.
PITCHER
Jon Lester, CHC at LAD ($38): Lester has plenty of favorable postseason experience under his belt, and this effort against a lefty-heavy Dodgers lineup should result in another excellent effort. As the second-cheapest starting pitching option in this slate, the veteran southpaw makes for a tremendous option against a Dodgers offense that easily ranks last in runs per game among the four offense remaining at just 4.79 runs per game while the other three sit above 5.00.
Rich Hill, LAD vs. CHC ($45): Since Dodger Stadium has a significantly lower park factor and home run park factor than Yankee Stadium, it's not a bad idea to stack pitchers from the National League game. Hill was the best of the bunch in the regular season, as his 3.32 ERA and 1.09 WHIP were all lowest among the four available options. He lasted only four innings in the ALDS against Arizona, but should bounce back here.
CATCHER
Willson Contreras, CHC at LAD ($17): Contreras is prepared regardless of which pitchers the Dodgers throw at him in this one, as he has a wOBA over .350 against pitchers from both sides. The athletic catcher should find success once again here while batting out of the cleanup spot. With New York's Gary Sanchez struggling this postseason, Contreras has the highest upside at the catcher position.
FIRST BASE
Greg Bird, NYY vs. HOU ($16): Bird barely contributed to New York's major-league leading home run total in the regular season due to injuries, but he already has three postseason dingers in eight games. Considering Yankee Stadium's home run park factor ranks second in the league at 1.28, Bird's platoon advantage over the right-handed Charlie Morton puts the first baseman in good position to go deep again. Bird's tied for the least expensive first baseman in this slate, so he's an excellent bargain here.
SECOND BASE
Starlin Castro, NYY vs. HOU ($13): Castro loved playing at home in the regular season, posting a .372 wOBA at Yankee Stadium and a .304 mark on the road. He costs a mere $13, so Castro's too good a value to pass up given his home/road splits.
THIRD BASE
Alex Bregman, HOU at NYY ($14): Bregman decimated left-handed pitching this season with a .406 wOBA. CC Sabathia's 4.20 ERA at home was more than a full run higher than his 3.18 road mark, so this is the right place to face him. At only $14, you can't pass Bregman up at this price at Yankee Stadium.
SHORTSTOP
Didi Gregorius, NYY vs. HOU ($16): Between his spot in the heart of New York's explosive lineup and his home park's hitter-friendly conditions, Gregorius continues to make for a terrific play at $16. Like Bird, Gregorius will have the platoon advantage since he bats from the left side. That edge paid off for the shortstop in the regular season to the tune of a .354 wOBA against right-handed pitching.
OUTFIELD
George Springer, HOU at NYY ($20): Springer found even more success against southpaws than Bregman this year, posting a .413 wOBA. He maximizes plate appearances out of the leadoff spot while also bringing tremendous power coming off a 34-homer regular season.
Kyle Schwarber, CHC at LAD ($13): At just $13, Schwarber's power makes him a low-risk, high-reward play. With 27 of his 30 homers in 129 regular-season games coming off righties, Schwarber has the power to take Hill deep on any mistake.
Cody Bellinger, LAD vs. CHC ($18): Many will stay away from Bellinger due to the lefty-on-lefty matchup, but the rookie's .374 wOBA in that split during the regular season was right in line with his .383 mark against righties. Don't be afraid of using him against Lester, as no other Los Angeles hitter is likelier to produce in any given game regardless of the opponent's starting pitcher.
