Yahoo DFS Baseball: Sunday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Sunday's 15-game MLB slate begins at 12:10 PM ET. The below list of value plays is littered with guys from teams that still have something to play for, as those individuals will all be highly motivated to perform. There are plenty of options from other situations as well, so read on to find out Sunday's top choices at each position…

PITCHER

John Gant, STL at PIT ($25): Priced at the starting pitcher minimum of $25, Gant is a low-risk, high-reward option in this spot start. He's been serviceable with a 3.86 ERA and 20.5 percent strikeout rate in 9.1 innings with the big club, translating his 3.83 ERA and 22.8 percent strikeout rate from Triple-A Memphis over well. Players looking to spend big at other positions should roll the dice on the righty against a light-hitting Pirates offense that ranks 28th with 4.01 runs per game, especially since the St. Louis lineup will do everything in its power to claw out runs in pursuit of the second NL Wild Card spot.

German Marquez, COL at SD ($36): Marquez often pitchers in extremely hitter-friendly conditions at Coors Field, but he'll be the one holding the advantage for a change since San Diego's Petco Park sports a league-low 0.82 park factor. Its inhabitants have also made life easy for opposing pitchers, scoring a league-low 3.79 runs per game while striking out more than all but three other teams at 9.25 whiffs per contest. With the Rockies desperately attempting to hold on to the second NL Wild Card spot, Marquez should get no shortage of support as he looks to improve his record to 11-7 in this favorable matchup.

CATCHER

Buster Posey, SF at LAD ($8): Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw has looked vulnerable in four starts since coming off the Disabled List, with nine earned runs allowed in 15.2 innings over his last three after a successful return against the league-worst Padres offense. Posey's 25 hits against Kershaw are the most he has against any pitcher and Josh Collmenter is the only other hurler besides Kershaw to surrendered three home runs to Posey. This against the grain play could pay off big time if the catcher's .426 wOBA against lefties translates to another strong performance against this particular southpaw.

FIRST BASE

Justin Smoak, TOR vs. NYY ($11): The switch-hitting Smoak has been phenomenal from the right side with a .431 wOBA in 113 at-bats against left-handed pitching. Toronto's three-hole hitter should be able to do damage from that side once again in this home date with Yankees southpaw Jaime Garcia, who owns an ugly 5.21 ERA in 14 starts since June 17.

SECOND BASE

Cesar Hernandez, PHI at ATL ($15): The switch-hitting Hernandez has shown much better power from the right side. Nineteen of his 40 extra-base hits have come against left-handed pitching even though he has almost 200 more at-bats facing righties. Braves lefty Luiz Gohara has posted a 6.06 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in his first three starts, so Hernandez has a great opportunity to add to his .348 wOBA from the right side here.

THIRD BASE

Alex Bregman, HOU vs. LAA ($15): Bregman's a bargain at only $15 with lefty Tyler Skaggs on the mound for the visitors. The second overall pick in 2015 has lived up to his lofty draft status with a .398 wOBA against left-handed pitching, and is actually slightly better at home than on the road in that split despite Minute Maid Park's .83 park factor. Skaggs has allowed a wOBA over .330 to batters from both sides, so he's unlikely to provide much resistance against Bregman.

SHORTSTOP

Marcus Semien, OAK vs. TEX ($16): Semien's been hot of late, producing three consecutive multi-hit efforts while scoring six runs during that stretch. Oakland's right-handed hitting leadoff man will likely keep the good times rolling against Rangers southpaw Martin Perez, who has allowed a .360 wOBA to batters from that side.

OUTFIELD

George Springer, HOU vs. LAA ($16): Just like his teammate Bregman, Springer is particularly dangerous when facing left-handed pitching. His wOBA in that split is an even more impressive .417 and Springer's able to maximize plate appearances out of the leadoff spot, so the powerful outfielder's another excellent Houston bargain at just $16.

Carlos Gonzalez, COL at SD ($20): Gonzalez has finally rounded into form at the plate in September, slashing .345/.472/.741 this month despite playing only eight of 19 games at his hitter-friendly home park Coors Field. His career-high 10.5 percent walk rate this season puts the veteran outfielder in position to put up another strong road performance here with wild righty Luis Perdomo on the mound for San Diego. Perdomo has walked multiple batters in six consecutive starts while posting a 5.45 FIP and 23:19 K:BB in 41.1 innings over his past seven.

Ryan Braun, MIL vs. CHC ($15): Braun has quietly put together another strong campaign against lefties, posting a .365 wOBA in that split. Batting third in the Milwaukee order should help maximize his appearances in key situations against southpaw Jose Quintana, whose .324 wOBA allowed to batters from the right side is .072 higher than his mark against lefties. Star players are paid to show up in big games and Braun has shown himself to be up to the challenge with two-hit performances in each of the past two games in this important series between NL Central rivals.
