Yahoo DFS Baseball: Monday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

PITCHER

Carlos Rodon, CWS vs. MIN ($38): Rodon took a while to get back to form after returning from biceps bursitis, but the third overall pick in the 2014 draft has turned it on of late. Despite facing exclusively top 10 offenses in his past four starts, the southpaw has posted a dazzling 28:6 K:BB and 2.12 ERA over 29.2 innings during that stretch. Maintaining that form shouldn't be difficult against a Twins offense that ranks 20th in road OPS and 21st in OPS against lefties at .715 in both cases.

Cole Hamels, TEX at LAA ($45): No team has a lower OPS against lefties than Los Angeles with its meager .660 mark. Hamels is also far from the average left-handed starter, as he's posted 10 quality starts and an 8-1 record in 15 appearances. Two of those have come against these Angels, whom he's limited to one run on seven hits in 14.2 innings. His 15.7 percent strikeout rate is also due for massive upward correction since Hamels sports a career 23.1 percent mark and has never finished a season below 20.6 percent.

CATCHER

Yasmani Grandal, LAD vs. PIT ($12): Grandal is a cheap source of power, especially against right-handed pitching. The switch-hitting catcher has hit 71 of his 83 career home runs from the left side and owns a .343 season wOBA from there compared to a .312 mark when batting right-handed. Pirates starter Gerrit Cole has been pedestrian against left-handed hitters with a .345 wOBA allowed, so Grandal also has a decent matchup to exploit here.

FIRST BASE

Edwin Encarnacion, CLE vs. BOS ($21): Encarnacion has been on a power binge of late with six home runs in his past nine games. Another long ball could be in the cards against Boston southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez, who has posted a 1.31 HR/9 and 4.09 ERA in 55 road innings. Encarnacion has long pummeled left-handed pitching, as the veteran slugger's .366 wOBA in that split isn't far off his career .377 pace.

SECOND BASE

Jonathan Villar, MIL at SF ($7): Giants starter Chris Stratton is coming off a gem against the Nationals, but that doesn't change the fact that the right-hander has surrendered a .425 wOBA in 49 plate appearances against left-handed hitters this year. The switch-hitting Villar is primed to take advantage of this matchup, as his wOBA from the left side is .062 higher than from the right and he's been able to stir the pot out of the leadoff spot with eight hits, five runs and two steals in his last five starts.

THIRD BASE

Travis Shaw, MIL at SF ($18): Shaw's another left-handed hitter likely to deliver against Stratton. His wOBA against righties is .400, so it's no wonder Shaw has been batting cleanup of late. Stratton's home ERA is 8.68, so Shaw's prominent spot in the lineup should pay off in the form of at-bats with runners on base.

SHORTSTOP

Dansby Swanson, ATL vs. SEA ($7): Swanson's stepped up since getting recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett, getting on base safely in each of his past eight games. The minimum-priced shortstop should have no problem continuing to find success against Seattle southpaw Andrew Albers, who has spent most of his time in Triple-A while logging only 84.2 innings at the major-league level since making his debut in 2013. Albers has allowed a .362 career wOBA to batters from the right side while Swanson's .323 wOBA against lefties is .074 higher than his mark against righties.

OUTFIELD

Adam Jones, BAL vs. OAK ($19): Oakland right-hander Chris Smith comes in with an ugly 5.26 ERA after allowing at least three earned runs in each of his past five starts. Most of his struggles have actually come against fellow righties, as he's surrendering a .364 wOBA in that split while holding left-handed batters to a .300 mark. Jones is the perfect hitter to take advantage of Smith's weakness, as the veteran slugger has a .015 higher wOBA in righty-on-righty matchups than otherwise. That trend isn't a fluke for Jones, who sports a career .342 wOBA against right-handers and sits at .317 facing lefties.

Michael Conforto, NYM vs. ARI ($20): Conforto's proficiency against righties makes him a strong option against the scuffling Taijuan Walker. Walker's workload seems to be wearing the 25-year-old down, as he's allowed at least three earned runs in four consecutive starts for a 5.40 ERA after posting a tidy 3.47 mark in his first 16 appearances. The left-handed hitting Conforto should be able to add to those recent struggles given his robust .412 wOBA when facing right-handed pitching.

David Peralta, ARI at NYM ($20): Hitters may not get many more opportunities to take advantage of Robert Gsellman, who continues to fill in for Seth Lugo (shoulder). The unimpressive righty has a 5.98 ERA and has allowed a wOBA over .360 to hitters from both sides. Those numbers are music to Peralta's ears, as the leadoff man sports a .365 wOBA against righties and could well cross home plate multiple times in what should be a high-scoring affair.
