Wilson spent most of 2011 as a utility infielder for the Brewers, with whom he hit .227/.266/.360 in 75 at-bats over 54 games. He'll compete for a utility job this spring with Atlanta, but likely just adds depth at Triple-A.
Wilson returns this season to man his utility-infield role. While his glove is dependable, his bat is anything but. Still, if/when Jack Wilson gets injured this season, Josh will have to contend with Brendan Ryan to take over at shortstop. Otherwise, he'll play around the infield diamond in a utility gig.
Wilson ended the season as the everyday shortstop for the Rays thanks to injuries elsewhere. However, Wilson hit just .140 (8-for-57) over his last 18 games, and he'll start the spring competing for a utility infielder role with the Pirates, and not a starting job. Given his decent glove and that deceptively high batting average, he has a good chance of sticking in a utility role.
The 25-year-old Wilson is probably best suited for a utility role, although he did manage 17 home runs and 17 steals last year at Triple-A. If he wins a starting middle infield spot he might be able to duplicate those numbers, but he might also struggle to hit .230 while doing so. He was traded to Colorado from Florida in the offseason which boosts his value. He'll contend with Omar Quintanilla for a utility infield role.
Wilson rebounded at the plate, batting .299 with 15 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A. The sag in his walk rate at the higher level doesn't bode well, but he'll only be 24 next season, so there's still time for improvement.
Wilson hit just .253 at Double-A in 2003, putting his meager prospect status in doubt, as his batting average was his only discernable skill at the plate. At best, it's looking like Wilson will be a major league utility infielder.
The 1999 third-round pick hit .341 in a brief trial at Double-A, but otherwise had a disappointing season at the plate for High-A Jupiter. Just 22 next year though, with a .295 career batting average heading into 2002, the Marlins still hope he'll factor into their future.
