2024 Fantasy Outlook
Lange was outstanding to open 2023, compiling a 1.16 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 32 strikeouts over the first two months of the season. He shared closing duties in April, but took over in May to convert 8 of Detroit's 9 saves during the month. He maintained the role throughout a disastrous June (11.57 ERA), then rebounded, but his struggles persisted in August with more walks (13) than strikeouts (11) over 10 innings. Lange was bypassed for save chances until he improved his control, but he finished the year with a team-leading 26 saves (15th in the majors). His 15.6% walk rate that was 2nd-worst among qualified relievers, but his 39.1% whiff percentage was in the 99th percentile thanks to his elite curveball and effective changeup, while his K-rate was above-average at 27.4%. Lange has a chance to open 2024 as the Tigers closer, but Detroit may look for a more consistent option this off-season. Read Past Outlooks
Control issues persist in loss
Lange (0-1) allowed five unearned runs to take the loss in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Twins. He walked two and retired two batters via strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Lange didn't allow any hits or earned runs, but it still wasn't a great performance. Coming on in the top of the 12th inning with a runner on second, the righty walked the first hitter he faced. Later in the frame, Lange walked in a run with the bases loaded. The big blow came a few batters later, when a Zach McKinstry fielding error with the bases loaded led to three more runs. While Lange sits with a solid 2.08 ERA, free passes continue to be a big problem, as he now has seven of them this year in just 4.1 innings. Lange will need to cut down on the walks if he wants to earn trust in high-leverage spots. He also tossed a whopping 36 pitches in the uneven appearance, so he surely won't be available for the nightcap.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
How interested would you be in a relief pitcher who boasted a 100th percentile whiff rate, 30-plus percent K-rate and 55% groundball percentage? Well, Lange's curveball *and* changeup had the best whiff rates in the league for those pitch types (min 25 PA), at 57.8% and 56%, respectively. The curve was so effective, it became his primary offering that he threw nearly 50% of the time. The change (20% usage) has always been filthy, yielding just six hits (no homers) and a .115 BA over the past two seasons. The 27-year-old also ditched his 4-seamer for a 96-mph sinker (29%) that induced more grounders. If Lange can improve his walk rate (10.9% for his career), the Tigers could afford him an opportunity to close, especially after Gregory Soto was shipped off to the Phillies. The Tigers have yet to indicate their ninth-inning plans following Soto's departure, but Lange is likely to be the top internal option entering 2023.
