Gonzalez was traded to the Rangers as the player to be named in the Jonathan Lucroy deal (July 30).
ANALYSIS
Gonzalez has been enjoying a breakout year in the Pioneer League, hitting .321/.388/.519 with three homers and 11 stolen bases in 45 games. He's one of the more projectable hitters in rookie ball, and has the tools to be a fantasy stud if he continues to develop. Gonzalez will report to Low-A Spokane.

Gonzalez has been on the radar of dynasty-league owners for a couple years now, as a high-profile international signee in 2014 with the type of offensive upside that is tough to find at any level of the minors. Last season was the closest he has come to showing that upside on the field, and it led to him being dealt to Texas in a deadline deal that sent Jonathan Lucroy to Colorado. He finished sixth among teenagers in the Pioneer League in ISO (.198) -- an encouraging sign, as lofty raw power projections are what has driven his perceived fantasy value. His .432 BABIP was largely responsible for what was easily a career-high .321 batting average, and his hit tool is still the one big concern. That said, he improved his strikeout rate last season and upped his walk rate. Most impressively, he utilized an all-fields approach for the first time in his career, so he legitimately improved across the board as a hitter last season. He is still four or five years from the majors, but cleanup-hitting upside remains in play.
Typically when the word "projection" gets assigned as a positive attribute for a young prospect, a pitcher is being discussed. Gonzalez is the hitter equivalent. He turned 19 after the 2016 season and measures in at 6-foot-5, 190 pounds. The converted shortstop now looks the part of a wiry center fielder, but most evaluators expect him to add 30 or 40 pounds of muscle before he hits his prime. There are a couple more assumptions that go into this being an appealing profile in dynasty leagues. First, he is expected to offer at least plus power at maturity, assuming he fills out. Second, he will need to hit at some point. He posted a 69 wRC+ and 31 percent strikeout rate in the Pioneer League last year, so stat-line scouts will likely avoid him entirely. However, this is a high-pedigree international signee ($1.4 million bonus in 2014) who was learning a new position and is in his developmental infancy. This should be viewed as a chance to get in on the ground floor.
