Having allowed 24 earned runs over 25 MLB innings in his career, seeing Flynn's 2016 performance culminate in a 2.60 ERA and 1.10 WHIP may come off as too good to be true. For one, Flynn wasn’t prone to retiring batters by way of the strikeout, as he posted a mediocre K-rate of 19.9 percent. Control wasn’t his forte either, for more than 10 percent of the batters he faced wound up reaching base via a walk. Rather, he relied on his fastball, slider, curveball, and changeup pitch arsenal to keep hitters on their toes. As a result, Flynn rode a 2.22 GB/FB to the forefront of the Royals’ bullpen and ended the season as their fourth-most-used reliever. However, Kansas City seldom used Flynn in high-leverage situations, which led to him accruing just two holds on the year. For 2017, he’ll figure to start the year as a primary relief option for the club, but could quickly fall back in the hierarchy if he reverts to his old, run laden ways.
Sent to Kansas City in exchange for Aaron Crow in the offseason, Flynn was aiming for a bullpen spot with the Royals, but was beaten out by Ryan Madson. There were thoughts that the left-hander could move into the bullpen eventually or even be stretched into a starter, but none of that could develop due to a back injury that cropped up after he appeared only once for Triple-A Omaha. The Royals have plenty of relief pitching depth, so there's a good chance they'll have the 25-year-old spend some time in Triple-A to improve upon the 4.06 ERA he posted in 2014 before giving him a chance with the big club.
Widely regarded as a top-10 prospect in the Marlins’ pitching-rich farm system heading into the season, Flynn struggled during brief stints with the big club in 2013 and 2014, posting a 8.64 ERA and 2.20 WHIP over 25.0 career major league innings. He also struggled to duplicate his success from the lower levels of the minors as he yielded a .302 batting average against during a full season at Triple-A New Orleans. Flynn’s 4.02 ERA  and 6.7 K/9 over 19.2 innings pitched represented steep declines from the 2.83 ERA and 8.0 K/9 that he put in 138 innings at that level in 2013. The lefty hurler stands at an imposing 6-foot-7 on the mound and leans on deception, command and control to get outs while sitting in the low-90s with his fastball. Flynn was traded to the Royals for Aaron Crow during the offseason, and he may be given an opportunity to take the ball as a starter for Kansas City at some point in 2015.
Standing at an imposing 6-foot-7, Flynn parlayed his length into a solid all-around season between Double-A and Triple-A before a cup of coffee with the Marlins in September. Flynn tossed 161 innings and recorded a 2.63 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with 147 strikeouts against 43 walks in the minors before he got knocked around during his brief stint in the majors, but he will be given plenty of time in 2014 to develop a secondary arsenal that includes an average slider as well as a curveball and changeup -- two pitches that remain works in progress. The lefty is built to be an innings eater at the major league level and has flashed strong strikeout and walk rates during his time in the minors. Flynn has a chance to see some time in the majors in the second half of 2014, though he'll have plenty of internal competition from more highly-touted prospect arms in the organization.
